Title: Notetaking with Obsidian
Post by: Kett on Jul 18, 2023, 07:43 PM
Cool new piece of software that got me addicted to productivity. Check it out (https://obsidian.md/).

Here's a video that goes over some of the things it does:

I've been using it for three days now and I'm loving it! I always felt like I needed to keep track of the things I do and the things I learn, but I never actually tried to use a tool for that purpose. It's great!

It's serving as both a "diary" sort of thing as well as general "codex" for all of my projects, interests, knowledge and etc. My Obsidian vault is like an externalized brain, and the visualization possibility with the node graph and the canvas features make it super easy to work with, and super rewarding to fill out.

Plus, nothing is stored in any kind of weird proprietary format that is impossible to transfer to another program and would be gone the moment the company goes away. It's all markdown you can open with a text editor, that ease of use allows me to use software like SyncThing to keep my vault synchronized between all my devices without ponying up for a subscription (which is probably also good, but I'm not interested) or using a cloud service like Google Docs. It's all my data to do with as I please. It's a nice change of pace.

I recommend Obsidian to anyone and everyone, it's a solid piece of software (even not being open-source)

There's a wide variety of plugins you can try out to change the way you use Obsidian, and these plugins are stored in the Vaults themselves, so you don't need to worry about reinstalling the same plugins in another device or even worry about the same plugins being present where you don't want them to be.

I've been using Obsidian for a while now. It's a bit laggy on my desktop but it's not unusable. Though it's a shame you have to pay to sync files between devices.

Lagginess is just a symptom of everything being an electron app nowadays, unfortunately.

Just like I said in the original post, I keep my stuff synced with SyncThing, it works pretty well for that purpose and my notes stay the same between my pc, desktop and two phones :)
